It’s very seldom that I get calls from plain citizens late at night, and I was pleasantly surprised a few nights ago when a senior citizen from Pavia called me up at home to let me know about her anger and disgust about the unfair commentary she heard from Roger Gencianeo of Bombo Radyo in the “Zona Libre” program earlier that evening.
“Pardon my difficulty in speaking because I am hooked to an oxygen tank,” she started. “But I had to call you and let you know about the one-sided and untruthful broadcast made by Roger Gencianeo about your qualifications as provincial administrator.”
As I gathered it, Gencianeo had attacked me on his program, claiming that I had no right to stay a minute longer in my position because of the Supreme Court ruling dismissing my appeal on the exclusion case filed by TESDA secretary Augusto Syjuco that led to the removal of my name as registered voter of Barangay Amparo, Pavia, Iloilo.
This has been going on for three nights, and my caller, who has known me as a regular and familiar figure in Barangay Amparo for more than 25 years now, decided she’s had enough of these lies. She called up Bombo Radyo to dispute the statements of Roger Gencianeo.
She was fuming mad.
Well, I listened to her and gave her time to vent her anger.
Then, I told her the truth about Roger Gencianeo.
“Don’t waste your energy and time on Roger Gencianeo,” I gently told her. “He’s a paid propagandist working for the political enemies of the Tupas administration. It’s his job to demolish Governor Tupas and myself.”
This surprised the caller. All her life, she had thought that all broadcasters are supposed to be fair, truthful and objective. She understood the power of media, particularly radio, and she felt that only those who adhered to the media code of ethics should be allowed to handle radio programs. She had no inkling that corruption had penetrated the ranks of mainstream media, and supposedly level-headed, objective and fair individuals could broadcast over the airlanes.
That’s the ideal, I said. But the sad reality is that politics has eroded the credibility of media, because many political figures make use of “guns-for-hire” in the media industry to destroy the names and character of their enemies. Roger Gencianeo is one of those “guns-for-hire”. Two other broadcasters, Rhod Tecson and Novie Guazo, also belong to the same category.
Roger Gencianeo works for a media racket operated by another black propagandist, Florence Hibionada. Their clients include board member Richard Garin and Rolex Suplico. This group includes a few other characters in media who pretend to be professional journalists, but are actually “wolves in sheep’s clothing”, preying on government officials and business people targeted by their clients for demolition. But Roger is part of a triumvirate along with Tecson and Guazo. Unknown to the management of Bombo Radyo, the three are as close as when they were together in the Florete radio outfit. They are bound by an umbilical chord: money.
This is the reason anybody who listens to Roger will easily notice that the Tupas administration is a favorite whipping boy. At every opportunity, Roger will pounce upon Governor Tupas and Boy Mejorada. But he has never, never ever, attacked the Garins, his major patrons through Hibionada. Neither has he attacked Suplico despite the latter’s critical missteps and misdemeanors. Listen to him, and then listen to Tecson and Guazo, and one can detect a common agenda: destroy the image of Governor Tupas and Boy Mejorada.
Roger does not even pretend to have any fairness or objectivity left. When it comes to castigating Governor Tupas or myself, all rules of ethical journalism are thrown aside. He is like a Doberman given an order to attack; his fangs glisten, his saliva dribbles down his throat, ferocious without mercy, unmindful that he is destroying the reputation and character of people. Naturally, he gets rewarded each time he snarls and bites Tupas and myself. He gets to meet Hibionada for breakfast at McDonald’s at the Atrium, where his handler pats him in the back and hands him a bone, nay an envelop, for the “good work”.
Hence, it would be useless to expect any ethical behavior from a paid propagandist like Roger. He has to support his fetishes, that’s why. He cannot enjoy the luxury of going to the beauty parlor with his salary alone. What he doesn’t know is that even in Bombo Radyo, where he is the assistant station manager, co-workers secretly call him “manay”.
Roger is also a traitor in the Bombo organization. His loyalty belongs to Florence, Tecson and Guazo. Once, he sent a text message obviously intended for Tecson and Guazo to leak information about matters discussed during a staff meeting at Bombo. By mistake, he sent the message to a co-worker at Bombo. He doesn’t know it, but the other broadcasters at Bombo know his secret personality.
My advice to well-meaning friends and supporters who are angered and agitated whenever they hear broadcasts made by Roger, just change the number on your radio dial and listen to other stations instead. Don’t waste a single minute listening to garbage. Roger is only earning his ticket for the next trip to the beauty parlor!
I have been swamped by text messages and telephone calls from reporters covering the Capitol and City Hall beats about the hilarious moments they have been having just reading and rereading “Manay Roger”.
“It’s about time the unethical and PR activities of Manay Roger are exposed to the general public,” one reporter said in a text message.
Another female reporter was particularly amused that behind the “macho” voice is a beauty parlor habitue. “Ayyy…. abi ko gani lalaking-lalaki…, baliskad gali,” she said.
A correspondent of a major national daily said he nearly spilled his morning coffee as he scrolled down his laptop computer, laughing at the things he read about Manay Roger.
To borrow a familiar phrase from “Lapsus” of Panay News, Ted Aujero Francia “dies-dies laughing.”
It’s about time. It disgusts me to hear stories from paidhacks like Gencaneo (who has mastered his lines of “I see, Yes, and Gali”), Tecson and Guazo (who both feel empowered calling people “gago”), with the active participation of Talib Muti Hibionada. These three musketeers feel like they own the world with their facade of uprightness, coupled with Hibionada’s money-greasing activity. But guys, we all know what you’re up to. In fact, we can see through you. You speak as if you’re the last disciples left in this world. Makahuluya kamo nga apat sa inyo profession. Clean up your act then cast the first stone. There is too much corruption in each one of you. Hypocrites!
you hit the nail on the head, dennissereyes! i might add that what you said is mild. these broadcasters you call the “three musketeers” have brought the quality of broadcast journalism to the level of the sewerage canal. listen to them, and it’s clear that almost nothing is spewed from their mouths but filth. they don’t have the slightest understanding of journalism ethics. the basic tenets of fairness, objectivity and accuracy are alien to them. they are a disgrace to the profession. they give media a bad name.
It seems that I touched a raw nerve in writng this post, “Manay Roger”.
For two nights after the post was published, Bombo Roger Gencianeo tried several times to call me, apparently wanting to interview me. Perhaps he wanted to show that no, contrary to what I wrote, he is not being unfair toward me, that he is balanced and objective in his broadcasts, and the usual b.s. But I am not easily fooled by such tactics, and I just ignored his calls. I don’t want to participate in a scripted drama to show that all these allegations about his corrupt activities are untrue.
Shortly after that, nasty posts regularly showed up in the “Comments” section of this blog, apparently a propaganda counter-offensive of Gencianeo and his patroness, Florence Hibionada, and his secret allies, Rhod Tecson and Novie Guazo. It is the same post each time — below-the-belt, personal, and totally untrue. But that’s beside the point. What pains me is that it is written so badly it wouldn’t get a passing grade in Grade Six English class. I can take personal attacks; for more than two decades, these have become common fare for me.
What I can glean from this reaction is that these character assassins can’t take it when the barrel is turned on them. Not the cal. 45 barrel, but the barrel of truth and public opinion. They can’t stand it that their corruption, incompetence, and pretensions are being exposed to the whole, wide world. They are afraid that their clients will discover the truth about them.
I am investigating the truth about a new hospital in Iloilo and the group of Hibionada. Since last year, so-called “exposes” erupted over the airlanes and came out in local newspapers under the supervision of Hibionada concerning alleged malpractices by the hospital. My radar’s alarm bells have been ringing since I heard and read these reports, because Hibionada is the lead handler of the exposes. Why? Because her best friend works in that hospital as public relations and marketing manager. One plus one equals two.
It has gone to the extent that the hospital’s owner has filed a libel case against Rhod Tecson. The hospital’s lawyer is Cornelio “Kune” Panes. Is this attaining clarity in your mind? Not yet? Well, Panes is the best friend and patron of Hibionada. Could this be an orchestrated ploy on the part of the hospital to gain media mileage? Is it the corporate philosophy of the hospital to thrive on controversy? This is a complex situation. There’s an intricate web that would reveal deeper connections between the players than the surface allows the audience to see.
On the attack side are Hibionada, Tecson, Guazo and Gencianeo.
On the defense are Kune Panes and Joy de Leon.
At the center is Dr. Evangeine Johnson.

sa matuod lang, daw masuka ako when i hear rhod tecson and novie guazo compete with each other in calling themselves “guapo”. this is a symptom of a mental disorder that requires professional psychiatric care. it is our misfortune that their garbage is allowed to fill the airwaves. somehow the government’s regulatory agency, national telecommunications commission, should investigate this apparent abuse of broadcasting ethics.
Mr. Bombo announcer, however much you are paid now in this lifetime, will not compensate or even remotely disrupt the constant pain and suffering your worthless soul will endure for your fraudulent, deceitful, and libelous conduct in this lifetime. Look at yourself honestly in the mirror and can you really tell yourself that what you are doing is influenced by your objectivity and the pursuit of verified and informed broadcasting? No! A man like you or whatever you are, probably does not have a conscience or soul left in your pitiful body to admit that what you are doing is wrong. Go ahead bask in the joy of your flawed thinking that you have friends in high places, that you are well taken cared of, or that you are set for the rest of your life. It will not be long before those same people you call friends will turn the tide on you when your usefulness runs out.Do you hear what’s coming? Thats KARMA right next to your pathetic-that you call body. If you think that God still listens to you, pray that the people that handles your disgusting body after you have a heart attack, a kidney failure, or any serious disease are not friends with the people of the hospital you have been maligning. Pray to your demon that you have sold your soul to that the driver of the ambulance takes you to a hospital that will actually try to save your pathetic worthless life. But knowing you, you probably didn’t understand what I wrote, so plainly put you’ll get what’s coming to you!
Correction Mr. Mejorada. On the defense side are the good people that are not easily swayed by false, libelous broadcasting. And believe me there are more of them than the evil people perpetuating the absurd attack on the innocent people of SIH.
